A Simple Prayer To Start the Week

She slips down quiet in the early morning.  Not a sound and yet…a sigh could be seen.  The clatter of dishes and morning frenzy hurls its fury and still she sits.

Silent.

Bent over.

Carrying the weight of the world…her world. Where grades and status and if you can hit the ball over the net really matter. There’s nothing breaking a momma’s heart more than when you can’t DO anything and no matter how many promises of “it will be OK” don’t seem to change a thing.  So that’s when you do what we the believers know we have to do.  You get down on your knees and you start praying. Start reciting what you were told a long way back when you were the girl in the chair bent low and facing another test of life. And her tears give way to mine as the words come stumbling out reminding us all WHO WE ARE.

Jesus, you are my shepherd.  You are her shepherd. You provide all we need. You give rest for our weary bodies and anxious hearts. You find the quiet places that refresh our spirits. You know the right paths for us to walk in today and you will lead us through them because you are good and you long for us to really know deep down in our souls your goodness.  Even when you call us into dark valleys, it is not without your planning and your provision.  You know the way and have made sure that your comfort and your care will go with us. You long to prepare a table for us where we can feast in your presence for it is there you remind us how well we are known and loved by you for you call us your children, the sheep of your pasture.  When we are bothered and annoyed by the things of this world you promise to anoint us with your spirit so we can be free of all that weighs us down.  It is then we know without a shadow of a doubt that your goodness and your love will never leave us.  You will be with us even to the end.

Amen. (Psalm 23)
